Which of these people the law actually controls, and which it does not.

Anyone may call themselves a surveyor, a structural engineer, a builder or an estate agent. Using the word architect without being on the register is a criminal offence. Working on gas unregistered is a criminal offence. An estate agent must belong to a redress scheme and be registered with HMRC, and you can check both in under a minute. Almost nobody knows which is which, so here is every one of them, with the register.
